Juneteenth is a celebration for freedom, resistance, and revolution. Over the decades it has been celebrated by Black Americans to symbolize our fight for freedom and true equality. This poem was written for and originally performed at Boise, Idaho’s 2021 Juneteenth Celebration.
This is my dad, Marcus, born in October 1960. At the time of his birth he didn't have citizenship rights in America.
When it comes to dating and relationships I realized how much women are socialized to center men in our life. From the children’s movies we watched as kids to the social pressure from our families as we get older, centering men impacts how we see ourselves, controls the boundaries we create, and shapes what we find important.
